Chongqing University (CQU) is a key national university in China, directly under the State Ministry of Education, it is also one of the "211 Project and 985 Project” universities with full support in the construction and development from the central and local Government of China. CQU is located in Shapingba District, a cultural and educational center in the city of Chongqing, a major municipality of industry and commerce in the Southwest of China, an economic center on the upper reaches of Yangtze River.

At present, Chongqing University runs 32 schools, plus the Graduate School, the City College of Science and Technology, the College of Continuing Education, the College of Networking Education. The University now has a total enrollment of 50,000 students, of which 20,000 are master's and doctoral students, and 30,000 undergraduate students. The university owns 24 mobile workstations for postdoctoral study, 133 doctoral programs, 256 master programs, 18 professional master's degree programs, namely MBA, EMBA,MPA, master of engineering, and 89 bachelor's degree programs in 8 academic categories of scinece,engineering, liberal arts, conomics, management, law, agriculture and education. Currently, the university has a total number of 5,400 faculty and staff members, among which about 2700 are full-time teachers, 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 12 contracted members from other institutions, 6 members of the Subject Appraisal Team of the Degree Committee under the State Council, 4 chief scientists of the National 973 Project,4 the state-level middle-aged or young experts with distinguished contribution, 500 doctorate supervisors, 1,700 full professors and associate professors.
Chongqing University covers a total area of 5,500 mu (about 178 hectares), with 1.60 million square meters of construction space. The university library is well equipped with modern facilities of large scale, with a collection of 3.90 million volumes, 6000 kinds of Chinese and foreign periodicals, and 2.0 million volumes of E-books. In addition to 5 electronic reading rooms with 65000 kinds of e-books and journals, the China Education Research Network (CERNET) Chongqing Central Node is set up in the library.

Chongqing University attaches great importance to international academic exchange and cooperation. It has established inter-university exchange links withover 100 institutions of higher education in 20 countries such as the USA, England, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia, Holland, Japan, South Korea, Russia, etc.Besides, the university has forged cooperative relations with about 20 prestigious international corporations or institutions such as Siemens, Rockwell Automation, IBM, Microsoft, Lipo Group, New York Life Insurance, Omron, ABB, Ford, etc. Chongqing University is authorised by the Ministry of Education to receive overseas students with the Chinese Government Scholarship. In 2013, more than 1200 international students are studying at Chongqing University, from over 123 countries. CQU has setup two Confucious Institutes in Thailand and Italy respectively, in cooperation with Betong City government and Sant Anna School of Higher

Medical Insurance

Chongqing University’s regulations require that all international students must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Students are required to purchase the Comprehensive Insurance Plan of Foreign Students provided by Ping An Insurance Company on the day of registration, which has been recognized and recommended by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

The medical insurance premium is 300 RMB for a semester and 600 RMB for a year. Note: The Students who do not have valid medical insurance are not allowed to register.

Programme Objectives

The programme is specifically designed for those oversea students who study Chinese as a second language. It not only provides students with a systematical training in Chinese language theories and skills, but also highlights the knowledge regarding Chinese culture, Chinese literature, Chinese history, and Chinese philosophy etc. Equipped with a comprehensive knowledge in Chinese language and culture, students are supposed to be competent for teaching Chinese to the speakers of other languages, as well as conducting Sino-foreign cultural exchanges and cooperation.

Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with the bachelor’s degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee.

Students who are not qualified to graduate will receive a certificate of completing the courses. Students who drop out the program due to certain reasons will receive a study certificate.

Application requirements: Prospective students should have a non-Chinese passport and be in good health and under the age of 45.

Academic requirements: Prospective students must hold a recognized bachelor's degree or above, or equivalent.

English proficiency: Minimum requirement is 550 or above for TOEFL, 75 for Internet-based TOEFL (ibt), or 6.0 or above for IELTS, or other certificate of English proficiency from an approved authority. Native English speakers are exempt from this requirement; other candidates whose university courses are taught in English will be considered case by case.

Professional backgrounds: Prospective students who are able to show relevant professional experience deemed appropriate to the program applied for will be given prior consideration.

Credits Requirements: Usually, a total 20 to 25 credits are required for graduation, consisting of compulsory courses, core courses, elective courses, research activity and dissertation. For detailed information, please refer to the specific program.


A passed dissertation is required for the degree. It should be in a subject, which is important in their area of study, of interest to them, and relevant to their career aspirations. The dissertation, written in English, builds on the taught elements of the program and allows students to demonstrate the knowledge and the analytical and intellectual skills they have developed during the program. The dissertation also needs to be of direct practical relevance to their research area. Academic staff provides expert supervision during the period of preparation of the dissertation.

Degree Awarding

The master’s degree will be awarded if the master student meets the credit requirements and passes the dissertation defense.

1.      Long-term Chinese Language Programme

Entry requirement

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, in good health and age between 16 -60.

Course Information

Chinese language programme is open to international students in both spring and autumn semesters. We offer 3 levels of Chinese language prorgammes—elementary, intermediate, and advanced starting from three months, one semester to one year or two years.

2.      Short-term Chinese Language Programme

Chongqing University offers short-term intensive Chinese programme (from one week to two months). Students will immerse in Chinese language and culture. Students will receive a study certificate upon completion of the programme.

3.      Short-term Chinese Language Program for Group Students

Chongqing University also runs short-term programmes for groups of international students. Courses can be specially designed upon request, with language courses in combination with lectures which covers subjects related to Chinese economics, public policy, ethnics and values, history, geography, culture and arts. We will organize a wide range of visits including places of historic interest, scenic spots, exhibitions, companies, and museums. A certificate will be awarded at the end of the programme.
